WordPress Editor Toolbar Missing, Widgets Won’t Open
Problem: You go to write or edit a WordPress post or page and the editor tool bar (tinymce) is missing. You click on the Visual and HTML tabs and nothing happens. You try to open widgets in the sidebar and they won’t open, nor can you drag them in or out of the sidebar.
Last month I had a meltdown on my web hosting account that was completely my fault. Luckily, the tech team at SuperGreen Hosting saved my butt. 29 of my blogs were damaged, but all’s cool now.
Due to the problems described above, I notice the ’Error on page’ icon in the lower left corner of the IE browser. Double-clicking on it gave me all kinds of errors like object not found, object doesn’t exist or object expected type of errors regarding .js files in the wp-includes folder. Yet, the files were all there.
I downloaded WordPress from www.WordPress.org and extracted it on my hard drive and copied the “missing” files up to the blogs. A month ago when this all happened, that solved the problem. Last night I ran into the problem again on one of my blogs, only this time replacing the files didn’t work. After several hours of searching, I found something that did work and I thought I’d share it just in case someone else has this same problem.
Solution: On the WordPress form (you can click that link for the thread), moderator Otto42 said there is a javascript compression issue and to install the Use Google Libraries plugin. BAMM! Problem solved. That brought the editor toolbar back and all the widgets were now free to move about the cabin. I really have to respect the people who know that stuff.
