Integrating wordpress with dreamweaver?

A Reader Would Like To Know:

Hello,

I am proficient in dreamweaver and know how to write in html and css. My question is this, I want to take a free theme from wordpress, download it and bring it into dreamweaver, edit it and put it up on my server. Now are these the right steps to take? I want to start building sites and using wordpress as the cms for people. I really just dont know where to start as I have read conflicting information on how to go about this.
Also I want to add that I really just want to use the template, I do not want to use wordpress.org in my domain name, I own my own domain. I’m not talking about building a page then splitting it up in php files to make it editable, is there a way I can make wordpress my cms without having wordpress in the url?

You put the WordPress files on your hosting site and you have WordPress. It has nothing to do with the URL.

As far as editing the theme, it’s mostly PHP, so Dreamweaver is just going to get in your way. You’ll have to learn programming, then you’ll have to learn PHP. Then open the files in a text editor (Notepad++ http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/download.php is good) and edit away. For the graphic part of the theme you can use GIMP http://www.gimp.org/

I suggest you learn more about how websites work first, though – you sound as if all you know is HTML and CSS – you’ll need to know a LOT more than that before you start making WordPress themes.

Ok, so what you’re saying is you don’t want xxxx.wordpress.com. Then what you need is a self-hosted WordPress blog. In order to do that, you first need a domain name. You can get them cheap from NameCheap. Then you need web hosting. I suggest getting cPanel web hosting. The WordPress software will already be loaded on your account so all you have to do is install it via Fantastico in the control panel onto whatever domain you want.

If you’re not going to be coding, you can make your own WordPress themes with Artisteer. It’s the bomb. I’ve been using it for almost two years down. Download it for free and try it out for 30 days. What I like to do is find site and blog layouts that I like and then replicate them in Artisteer. You can change everything like fonts, colors, layout and more.

Oh, technically, WordPress is not a CMS, it’s a blogging platform. Joomla, Drupal, DotNetNuke are just a few CMS programs. Artisteer can also make them.
